Education News Today: Odisha Textbook Errors, Telangana School Notices and Kolkata Science Quiz

The education sector witnessed several notable developments across India, ranging from textbook quality concerns to regulatory action involving private schools and student-focused academic competitions.

Odisha Textbooks Found to Have 1,731 Errors

A three-member committee examining newly introduced textbooks for Classes 1 to 8 in Odisha government schools has identified significant problems in the preparation and review process.

The committee found that the issues were not limited to spelling or printing mistakes. The errors reportedly included factual, conceptual, historical, geographical, language and image-related problems.

The report pointed to inadequate academic scrutiny, fact-checking, proofreading and supervision at different stages of textbook preparation. A re-examination of the textbooks by the Directorate of Teacher Education and SCERT identified 1,731 errors, including factual errors.

The committee has held the Directorate of TE and SCERT primarily responsible for the lapses and highlighted the need for stronger quality-control procedures in textbook preparation.

Nearly 13,000 Telangana Private Schools Face Show-Cause Notices

In Telangana, nearly 13,000 private schools are set to receive show-cause notices for failing to upload required fee details and annual audit reports despite repeated directions from the school education department.

The state has 18,677 private schools, but only 739 had uploaded the required documents at the time of the report.

The Director of School Education has directed regional and district education officials to issue notices to the concerned school managements and submit compliance reports.

The development comes as authorities continue to seek greater transparency in school fee information and financial reporting.

Kolkata Students Put Their Knowledge to the Test

In Kolkata, Julien Day School hosted the 2nd edition of the Grace Julien Memorial Inter-School Science Quiz Competition 2026.

Teams from 14 schools participated in the competition, which tested students on science, current affairs and analytical thinking.

Following the preliminary round, eight schools qualified for the final round. The event was organised in memory of the school's founder, Grace Julien, and also highlighted the importance of quizzing in developing students' knowledge and thinking skills.

Key Takeaways

The latest education developments highlight three important areas: the need for stronger academic quality checks in textbooks, greater compliance and transparency among private schools, and the importance of activities that encourage students to develop knowledge and analytical skills.

These developments reflect the wide range of issues currently shaping school education across India.
