Kodava Sahitya Academy Seeks Review of Kodava References in CBSE Class 10 English Textbook
The Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy has sought a review of references related to the origin and traditional attire of the Kodava community in a CBSE Class 10 English textbook.
The references appear in Glimpses of India, in the chapter titled ‘Coorg’, which introduces students to the culture, landscape and traditions of Coorg, also known as Kodagu.
According to the Academy, the chapter contains statements suggesting possible Greek or Arabic ancestry for the Kodava community. It has also raised concerns about references that connect traditional Kodava attire with Arab and Kurdish clothing.
The Academy has requested a scholarly review, correction and withdrawal of statements that it considers historically unsubstantiated. It has emphasised that references to the history, identity and origin of a community in a Class 10 textbook require accuracy and careful scholarly examination.
The Academy maintains that Kodagu is the ancestral homeland of the Kodavas and that the region's history, traditions, mythology and cultural identity are closely associated with the community.
The issue has highlighted the importance of presenting the history and cultural identity of communities accurately in educational materials. Textbooks used by school students play an important role in shaping their understanding of India's diverse cultures and traditions.
A detailed scholarly review of the disputed references could help establish the historical basis of the claims and determine whether revisions are required in the textbook.
